Preparing for a job interview: walk in with confidence

Preparing for a job interview: walk in with confidence

Reading time: 3 minutes

Job Interview: Nerve-Wracking, But More Predictable Than You Think

Sweaty palms before a job interview are completely normal. What fewer people realize: if you think logically, you can predict about 90% of the questions you'll be asked. "Tell me about yourself." "What are your strengths and weaknesses?" "Why do you want this job?" These aren't surprises โ€” they're standard parts of almost every interview.

So the question isn't whether you'll get these questions, but whether you're ready for them.

Your Preparation in 4 Steps

  1. Know the job posting and the company. Read the job listing again, note which competencies keep coming up, and check the company's website and recent news. This is the source of nearly every question you'll be asked.
  2. Build your success stories. Think of three situations where you achieved a concrete result. Use them to answer a variety of questions โ€” from "tell me about a challenge" to "what are you proud of".
  3. Prepare your own questions. An interview works both ways. Questions about growth opportunities, team culture, or day-to-day tasks show genuine interest. Save salary and benefits for a later conversation โ€” that usually doesn't belong in round one.
  4. Practice out loud. In front of a mirror, with a friend, or in the car. Answers you've only formulated in your head sound different once spoken out loud.

The Classic Slip-Ups

Showing up late. Speaking negatively about your previous employer. Your phone going off. Going silent too often because you didn't know what to say. These aren't dramatic mistakes on their own, but they add up โ€” and they're all preventable with five extra minutes of preparation.

Video Interviews Have Become the Norm

A first round via video is now completely common. Check your lighting, camera angle, and internet connection beforehand. Nothing is more frustrating than a strong answer cutting out due to a glitchy connection โ€” while the interviewer thinks you simply had no answer.

One Thing You Shouldn't Forget

Your resume is your cheat sheet during the interview: the interviewer has it in front of them and will ask questions about it. Make sure it's accurate, up to date, and tailored to the position you're interviewing for โ€” not the version you used two years ago for a completely different job. With CV-Refresher, you upload your current resume and within a few minutes have an updated, polished version that fits seamlessly with the conversation you're about to have.

In Short

  • About 90% of the questions asked can be predicted with logical thinking.
  • Prepare three concrete success stories you can use broadly.
  • Ask your own questions too โ€” it's a conversation, not an interrogation.
  • Save salary and benefits questions for a later stage.

What users say about their new resume

โ€œIt was nice that I could upload my old CV, so I didn't have to type in all the details again. The system took it over well. On top of that, I can adjust the layout completely to my own taste.โ€

โ€œHandy tool if you don't really know where to start. My CV became clearer and the job vacancy analysis gave me some good insights. I also found the salary advice interesting. Sometimes I thought the texts were a bit too formal and I adjusted them myself a bit. But as a basis, this is really a nice tool.โ€

โ€œThe cover letter writer in particular surprised me. I'd always struggled to write a good letter myself. CV-Refresher used my experience and the job vacancy in a really logical way. In the end I was invited for an interview. The whole combination of CV, letter and salary advice makes it really complete.โ€

โ€œI was applying for jobs again after a few years and didn't really know what my CV should look like these days. CV-Refresher gave me a clear starting point straight away. The combination with the job posting analysis works well. My CV became much more specific and I ended up getting invited for an interview. Very positive about the whole experience.โ€

โ€œCV-Refresher helped me present my work experience much better. Some of the phrasing wasn't quite my own style, so I adjusted that. But content-wise the suggestions were strong. I especially found the analysis of my salary position valuable. I would definitely use the tool again for a future job application.โ€

โ€œReally handy when you want to apply for a specific job. What I liked most was that the tool didn't just churn out a standard cover letter, but actually looked at my CV and the job listing. That made the letter feel much more personal. The salary report also gave me more confidence during the interview.โ€

โ€œI've recently moved to the Netherlands and wanted to adapt my Polish CV for Dutch employers. CV-Refresher was particularly helpful with the structure and highlighting my relevant experience. The cover letter was also a good starting point. I still had to check some Dutch phrasing, but it saved me a lot of time.โ€

โ€œMy CV hadn't been updated in a while. CV-Refresher turned it into a much stronger and more modern CV in a short amount of time. I especially liked the link with the job advert. Because of that, the cover letter really matched the role. I also liked that I could set the tone myself with four sliders, for example more formal or a bit more relaxed and warm. Because of that, the final letter really felt like my own story.โ€
