Resume tips 2026: how to get past the ATS filter

Reading time: 3 minutes

Why your resume sometimes never reaches a human

You spent hours on that beautiful resume. Sleek font, a column here, an icon there. You hit send and... silence. The culprit usually isn't a recruiter having a bad day, but an algorithm that had already rejected your resume before a human ever looked at it.

In 2026, three-quarters of Dutch companies with more than 100 employees use AI-driven ATS systems to screen resumes. And it's fast: an average of a few seconds for the AI, compared to more than half a minute for the first human glance. Your resume literally has less time to make an impression than it takes to soft-boil an egg.

The biggest ATS pitfalls

  • A creative design with columns and icons. Gorgeous for Pinterest, unreadable for a parser. An unoptimized resume simply won't clear the first filter, no matter how good you actually are.
  • Contact info in the header or footer. Some systems don't read those fields. Just put your name, phone number, and email in the main body text.
  • One resume for every job posting. ATS systems score based on relevance to the specific role. Spending ten to fifteen minutes tailoring your resume per application can make the difference between an automatic rejection and an interview invite.
  • Using synonyms instead of the exact term. If the job posting says "agile" and you write "flexible working approach"? Same thing to you, not to the algorithm. It misses the match.

How to build a resume that actually gets seen

  1. Keep it simple. One column, standard headings (Work Experience, Education, Skills), no tables or graphics.
  2. Borrow the keywords straight from the job posting. Literally. The ATS compares word for word, not the intent behind them.
  3. Make results measurable. "Increased revenue by 18%" beats "responsible for revenue growth" hands down โ€” for both humans and machines.
  4. Test it yourself. Copy the text of your resume into Notepad. Does everything stay readable and in the right order? Then your formatting is safe.
  5. Check your LinkedIn too. Nearly 9 out of 10 recruiters look at your LinkedIn profile before or during the interview โ€” make sure it matches your resume, or it'll raise questions.

Let's be honest

Fine-tuning a resume yourself for keywords, formatting, and readability takes time most job seekers would rather spend elsewhere. That's why we built the CV-Refresher: upload your current resume, choose an industry template, and within a few minutes you'll get back an ATS-friendly, professionally formatted version โ€” ready to download as Word or PDF. No hassle with columns that still get rejected.

โ€œHandy tool if you don't really know where to start. My CV became clearer and the job vacancy analysis gave me some good insights. I also found the salary advice interesting. Sometimes I thought the texts were a bit too formal and I adjusted them myself a bit. But as a basis, this is really a nice tool.โ€

โ€œThe cover letter writer in particular surprised me. I'd always struggled to write a good letter myself. CV-Refresher used my experience and the job vacancy in a really logical way. In the end I was invited for an interview. The whole combination of CV, letter and salary advice makes it really complete.โ€

โ€œI was applying for jobs again after a few years and didn't really know what my CV should look like these days. CV-Refresher gave me a clear starting point straight away. The combination with the job posting analysis works well. My CV became much more specific and I ended up getting invited for an interview. Very positive about the whole experience.โ€

โ€œCV-Refresher helped me present my work experience much better. Some of the phrasing wasn't quite my own style, so I adjusted that. But content-wise the suggestions were strong. I especially found the analysis of my salary position valuable. I would definitely use the tool again for a future job application.โ€

โ€œReally handy when you want to apply for a specific job. What I liked most was that the tool didn't just churn out a standard cover letter, but actually looked at my CV and the job listing. That made the letter feel much more personal. The salary report also gave me more confidence during the interview.โ€

โ€œI've recently moved to the Netherlands and wanted to adapt my Polish CV for Dutch employers. CV-Refresher was particularly helpful with the structure and highlighting my relevant experience. The cover letter was also a good starting point. I still had to check some Dutch phrasing, but it saved me a lot of time.โ€

โ€œMy CV hadn't been updated in a while. CV-Refresher turned it into a much stronger and more modern CV in a short amount of time. I especially liked the link with the job advert. Because of that, the cover letter really matched the role. I also liked that I could set the tone myself with four sliders, for example more formal or a bit more relaxed and warm. Because of that, the final letter really felt like my own story.โ€
